I've been enjoying the Olympics a lot more than I expected I would. But it occurred to me the other day, that I've never had cable during the games. So when I wanted to watch, say, the Dream Team or boxing, I was usually getting shitted on by NBC with 3 hours of gymnastics or rowing.
Boxing has definitely been my favorite to watch. Boxers from places I didn't expect were nice, Iran, India (3 fighters in the Q-finals), Mongolia. The U.S. fighters have been somewhat disappointing. Not so much because they lost, but in the ways they lost and how they reacted. A couple blamed the judges scoring (which has been shitty admittedly) but they pretty clearly lost their fights, in my opinion anyway. There's also this issue of them listening to the advice of their coaches back home. It breaks down the team dynamic, if each guy is deviating from the coach. Guys from other countries aren't doing that, they're uniting under one coach, for one goal(sounds corny, I know). As the boxing commentators put it, "you think Kobe, is calling Phil Jackson back in L.A. for advice?"...exaaaaactlyyyy! And in fairness, most of the guys who lost, did so gracefully, Shawn Estrada and Raynell Williams in particular.
I definitely support the American guys, but the Cubans are super impressive, and who I'd like to see win gold, especially Roniel Iglesias Sotolongo, only 20 and a super polished fighter. Otherwise, I dig the British, French, Dominicans and Indian fighters, and really respect all the guys I've seen fight.
As for the rest of the games, I want "Redeem Team" to win gold. They've been real entertaining, and it's admirable that these multi-millionaires are seeming to play for something bigger than themselves. Late last night I got to see a replay of Usain Bolt winning the 100 meters. Fucking amazing, the dude is SCARY fast. Homey started celebrating 15 meters before the race was over too.
I'm sick of Michael Phelps and the associated mania, sick of gymnastics, sick of the China-bashing, sick of China adding fuel to that fire.
The Olympics (coverage) is infamous for overkill, so naturally I'm sick of a bunch of shit.
Ironically, I haven't gotten to see much soccer. Oh well though, I'm enjoying what I have seen.
and thank NBC for cockblocking Olympic highlights on youtube. BITCHES.
